How to keep high-traffic areas clean

In any business location, whether you’re a patient-facing doctor’s surgery, or a busy office with staff walking from desk-to-desk, to the kitchen and break room and the bathroom, some areas collect more dirt than others.

Keeping some areas clean can feel like a losing battle, even when you have a commercial cleaning company clean professionally on a weekly basis. There are a few things you can do, however, to keep on top of high-traffic area cleaning to keep your business hygienic for visitors and employees.

What are high-traffic areas?

In short, high-traffic areas are places that visitors or employees use or walk through on a regular basis. These include:

  • Washrooms
  • Reception areas
  • Corridors
  • Shared kitchens
  • Break rooms
  • Lifts and stairs

What you can do to improve cleanliness

Keeping on top of cleaning in high-traffic areas doesn’t need to be labour-intensive. You can do bits here and there, as well as establish a “keep clean” culture.

Add doormats to entrances

It may seem very simple, but adding high-quality barrier matting to every entrance can go a long way in minimising the dirt that enters your building. A doormat can stop up to 80% of outside dirt from entering your building. Alongside our trusted supplier, we are able to provide custom-fit barrier matting for your entrances.

Encourage spot cleaning

People are messy. Even grown adults. Whilst you don’t want to treat your employees like children, it’s worth sending around an email to gently remind them to clean up things like coffee spills as and when they happen.

Regular rubbish removal

Don’t just let your rubbish pile up until your regular cleaner arrives. Make sure you take your bins out as soon as they’re full because overflowing rubbish bins, particularly those that contain food waste, can leak onto the floor, which is unsanitary and unpleasant.

Place hand sanitiser stations

Whilst hand sanitiser stations were popular during the global pandemic, many offices, particularly those that have regular visitors, have kept them in place, which will curb the buildup of bacteria and keep your employees safe.
